Agroforestry Systems and Management is a comprehensive text designed to provide students, researchers, professionals, and field practitioners with a clear understanding of the principles, practices, and applications of agroforestry in sustainable land-use systems. The book covers various agroforestry systems practiced under tropical, temperate, arid, semi-arid, and humid conditions, with emphasis on their structure, productivity, and management. Important topics such as alley cropping, silvopastoral systems, shelterbelts, windbreaks, multistorey systems, energy plantations, and specialized systems like apisilviculture and aquaforestry are discussed in detail.
The book also explains canopy management, nutrient cycling, soil and water conservation, carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation, and phytoremediation. Special attention has been given to industrial agroforestry, contract farming, rural entrepreneurship, and the National Agroforestry Policy of India. Written in a systematic and student-friendly manner, this book serves as a valuable resource for academic learning, competitive examinations, research, and practical implementation of agroforestry systems for sustainable agricultural and environmental development.
Dr. Somanath Sarvade is an Assistant Professor of Agroforestry at the Department of Forestry, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur (M.P.), India, with over a decade of experience in teaching, research, and extension. He did his graduation from BSKKV, Dapoli, Ratnagiri (MS) in 2008, PG from GBPUA&T, Pantnagar (Uttarkhand) in 2010 and PhD from Dr. YSP UHF, Nauni, Solan (HP) in 2024. He qualified the prestigious ICAR–JRF (2007, 2008) and ICAR–SRF (2011) examinations and was awarded the DST–INSPIRE Fellowship by the Government of India for PhD program. His research focuses on agroforestry systems, soil health, climate change adaptation, and sustainable land-use practices. He has published more than 43 research papers and over 18 review articles in reputed national and international journals and has reviewed 149 research and review papers for leading scientific journals from national and international publishers. He has successfully handled six research projects (three as Principal Investigator and three as Co-Principal Investigator) funded by ICAR, RKVY, and State Government agencies. Dr. Sarvade is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Young Scientist Award (2019, 2025), Best Teacher Award (2020), Sir Dietrich Brandis Award (2024), and Best Presentation Awards (2024, 2025), ISAF fellowship award 2025.
